Background:
Kateland began her career as a high school chemistry teacher with Teach For America. She taught at both public and charter schools, including Noble Network, in Connecticut and Chicago. She is passionate about science, technology, engineering, and math education and about empowering girls to enter traditionally underrepresented STEM professions. Kateland graduated magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and holds a master’s degree in public policy from Indiana University.
Why I do this work:
My mother was a teacher and growing up, I saw the impact she had on her students and their families. My mother taught at the high school level for 30 years, and near retirement she had grandchildren of her original students in her class! When I became a teacher, I saw firsthand the disparities that exist for children based on their ZIP code, skin color, and socioeconomic status. This is unacceptable, and I have committed my life’s work to creating a high-quality education system that is equitable for all students.
