With more than 30 years of public service and political experiene, his prior work includes senior-level positions at the local, state, and federal government level. Senator Groff served as the 47th President of the Colorado State Senate and was the first African American to hold the position of president in the Colorado Senate. Renowned as the “conscience of the Senate,” Senator Groff served in the Colorado General Assembly for nearly 10 years. During his tenure, he passed landmark legislation in education, criminal justice, and health care.

After Peter’s legislative service, he served as the director of the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in the U.S. Department of Education during the first term of President Barack H. Obama. The Center was part of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Senator Groff was born in Chicago and raised in Denver. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Redlands, a J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Denver.

I believe that education is one thing that consistently, constantly, and permanently changes the trajectory of one’s life. Regardless of their background, everyone in America deserves a high-quality public education that prepares them for college and/or career and a transformative life. It is the very least America can do.
