If you only read one thing today it should quite obviously be @gtoppo on Oregon Trail in @The74 https://t.co/2GsbZteqhq

If you are still reading…
We are learning more about what happened in the school shooting Michigan on Tuesday, there were some signs. Yesterday we talked about just how common that is.
Mike Bloomberg is betting big on charter schools. The reaction to this was fairly predictable. But it was surprising how many people who you’d expect to have some familiarity with the research instead just said things like, “charter schools don’t work” or don’t work in the urban context. There is some variance, yet the track record on urban charters is pretty good overall. You’re more likely to see mixed results elsewhere. This BW deck unpacks some of that (pre-pandemic data).
Also, this line from the Bloomberg op-ed:
Teachers understand the severity of the problem, and many are doing heroic work, yet some of their union representatives are denying reality. “There is no such thing as learning loss,” said Cecily Myart-Cruz, head of the Los Angeles teachers union, in an interview with Los Angeles Magazine this past summer. “Our kids didn’t lose anything. It’s OK that our babies may not have learned all their times tables. They learned resilience.”
What nonsense. How about reading, writing and arithmetic, the critical skills we are funding schools to teach?
Turns out that gay men have a lot of college degrees. I’m sure there is some “Moms For Liberty” joke in there somewhere…
